Extensive decay or damage like chips and fractures can make a tooth structurally instable. If a fracture is deep enough, bacteria can also penetrate the tooth causing infection. Symptoms such as pain when biting, as well as sensitivity to hot and cold, may indicate that your tooth is injured. Dr. Ghazanfari restores strength, structure, and comfortable function to compromised teeth through natural-looking porcelain restorations.
Inlays and Onlays
An inlay or onlay can repair a large cavity in a tooth, either left by decay or a pre-existing filling. The restoration fits into the hole like a puzzle piece and is held in place with a reliable bonding agent. Inlays and onlays restore function to teeth without the need for a full crown or extraction.
A crown covers the portion of a tooth that is visible above the gum line. Also called a cap, a crown fits snugly against the existing tooth to reinforce the structure. For back teeth that incur intense pressure, Dr. Ghazanfari may recommend a porcelain-fused-to-metal or all-metal crown.
What to Expect When You Receive a Crown, Inlay, or Onlay
Crowns, inlays, and onlays require two appointments. The first appointment includes the preparation of your tooth and design of your crown. Dr. Ghazanfari will take an impression in order to plan a restoration that will blend with your smile. The impressions and Dr. Ghazanfari’s exacting specifications are sent to a nearby dental lab for fabrication by an experienced ceramist. You will wear a temporary restoration until your permanent crown, inlay, or onlay is ready.
The second appointment includes the permanent placement of your handcrafted restoration. Dr. Ghazanfari will bond the dental crown to the remaining tooth structure. You may experience slight sensitivity around the tooth and gum post preparation and placement. However it should subside within a few days.
